Study says children suffer long-term effects from TBIs

Posted on Friday, February 17th, 2012 at 5:47 pm

A new study of children with TBIs in Australia shows the long-term effects of brain injuries in children. The study contradicts some previous research that suggests that children do not suffer any long-lasting brain damage after brain injuries because their brains are still developing.

The study analyzed 56 children who had suffered TBIs 10 years ago when they were between the ages of 2- and 7-years-old. Research revealed that the children who had suffered minor brain injuries were likely to recover completely and not suffer long-term effects, but the social, behavioral, and intellectual abilities of children who suffered serious TBIs were affected.

According to the study, children who suffered serious TBIs between the ages of 2- and 7-years-old were more likely to test 18-26 points lower on IQ tests 10 years after their injury. The study can be seen in the journal Pediatrics.

Student with cerebral palsy sues school to play baseball

Posted on Thursday, February 9th, 2012 at 10:05 pm

A student in southern California is suing his high school after coaches told him he was unable to play baseball due to his inabilities.

The student is deaf and has cerebral palsy. He has been active in the sport of baseball since the age of 9. Last year, he was able to play for the freshman baseball team, but was not allowed to continue his involvement with the sport at a higher level. He said that the junior varsity baseball coaches for the school, Ayala High School, told him he could no longer play on the team strictly because of his disabilities.

The lawsuit that the teenager has filed against the school says that this discrimination is a violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act. He is hopeful that he can receive a court order from a judge stating that he can continue to play baseball at his school.

Man Suffers Irreversible Brain Damage After Botched Surgery

Posted on Thursday, January 26th, 2012 at 8:39 pm

A Florida man is currently living with irreversible brain damage after suffering from complications of a botched gastric bypass surgery. The surgery took place in 2007 and shortly after the procedure was completed, the man started dealing with several injuries. The negligence and carelessness of the doctors was behind the worsening of the complications.

The 32-year-old man can no longer take care of himself. He is housed in a wheelchair and needs constant attention throughout the day to complete minute activities, such as bathing and eating. He filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the hospital where his surgery occurred, citing negligence.

The jury in the medical malpractice lawsuit sided with the victim and decided on a $177 million verdict. Although the malpractice victim is happy about the outcome of the lawsuit, he is still devastated about his current situation and would gladly take back the lawsuit if he could reverse the effects of the weight-loss surgery.

Canadian skier suffers brain injury and dies at 29

Posted on Thursday, January 19th, 2012 at 10:46 pm

A 29-year-old Canadian skier has passed away after suffering a traumatic brain injury during a practice run in Park City.

Sarah Burke was a freestyle skier who had placed at the Winter X Games four separate times. She was training at an event in Park City at a resort when she crashed on a half-pipe. This is the same half-pipe that Kevin Pearce, a professional snowboarder, crashed on in 2009.

The crash resulted in Burke ripping her vertebral artery, which caused serious bleeding of the brain. Sarah went into cardiac arrest following the brain injury and was taken to a hospital, where she died nine days later. Her internal organs were donated after her death.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Sarah’s family and friends during this tragic time.

The three players, all over the age 60, have filed the suit in a Manhattan Court after claiming that they all suffered from brain injuries today after receiving multiple head injuries while playing.

The suit states that officials within the league should have known that repeated head trauma and concussions could later cause degenerative brain injuries as the players aged. The players are seeking damages and medical assistance.
