In a settlement with New Jersey Transit, the victim of a bus accident was awarded $7.85 million. The accident occurred in 2008 in Paterson, New Jersey, when the plaintiff was crossing the street at a crosswalk.
The bus drove over the now-59-year old woman’s legs and caused her head hit the ground. After the accident, the plaintiff had her left leg amputated above the knee and partial amputation of her right foot, and suffered a fractured cheekbone and traumatic brain injury. She needed multiple surgeries and ventilation for 18 days, and stayed in the intensive care unit for several weeks, where she contracted sepsis.
The woman was ruled incompetent by the court’s judge due to her brain damage. In addition, the sepsis she contracted made her unable to speak. The plaintiff was being cared for at a rehabilitation facility, but family says that, with the settlement, they will move her into private care.
