A court has ruled that Amtrak must pay $160,000 to a cleaning employee that was injured on the job.

The incident occurred On October 1, 2007 as the woman was carrying trash bags from the train platform to a pickup truck when she stepped down an placed her foot on unstable rocks that caused her to sprain her ankle.

After the woman recovered from the ankle injury, her employers fired her for not using ‘common sense.’ They eventually took that back and only gave her a 30-day suspension. The woman was awarded the money because of loss of wages, punitive damages and trauma from being fire.

According to information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of fatal workplace injuries has decreased by 17 percent in 2009.

In 2008, the number of workplace fatalities was at 5,214 and in 2009 it fell to 4,340. This number is the lowest that it has been since the bureau began recording the numbers in 1992.

The numbers for 2009 are preliminary because the agency’s budget constraints may put a limit on how much research can be done at a time. The agency noted that last year’s number increased by 165 after the preliminary numbers were released.
